Included here are three pages of basic chords for 5 course Vihuela. These cords are identicle to open position 6 string guitar chords without the lowest pitched string. The tuning’s spelling is likewise identicle, beeing A D G B E (simply omits the guitar’s low E). These are the beginner chords, the open position chords (chords on the first three frets) and the basic barre-type chords.
Five course Vihuela of 1510 and beyond is virtually identicle to five course Baroque Guitar of the 1600’s and early 1700s, and five string Guitarra de Golpe of 1900’s classic Mexican Marriachi bands and period correct revivals thereafter. Guitarra de Golpe tuning is a form of re-entrant tuning but having it’s two highest pitched strings tuned an octave lower than “normal”. The word golpe means rhythm or beat, so it’s rhythm guitar.
As you play those chords, picture yourself 600 years ago on the Nina, Pinta, or Santa Maria — because someone was doing the exact same thing on their instrument ;’)
